The Kind of Love That Stays
by NABIP‑NN President Aliana Rushing
February often brings Valentine’s Day to mind cards, flowers and grand gestures. But the kind of love that feels most relevant to our work this month looks a little different. It’s the kind of love that stays.
When I first entered the insurance industry at 16, my motivation was simple: I adored my family. Not many of you know this, but my father, Robbie Rushing, was a single dad raising two teenage girls while running two businesses and working tirelessly to support us. Watching him juggle it all left a lasting impression. I remember thinking, What better life is there than one where you get to work alongside the people you love?
What I didn’t know then was that my love for family would grow into a love for this industry and that love would grow again into a deep commitment to our community, our clients and the advocacy work that shapes our profession.
In our work as health insurance agents, love rarely looks flashy. It looks like commitment. It looks like patience, reliability and consistency. It shows up in the hours spent untangling complicated situations, answering hard questions and standing beside clients during moments that are stressful, confusing or deeply personal.
It can look like:
- Walking beside a widow who has no idea where to begin after losing her spouse.
- Supporting someone choosing between plans not based on preference, but on survival.
- Carrying the weight with families navigating chronic illness, where exhaustion never really ends.
- Guiding someone through enrollment after a major life change: a divorce, relocation, job loss...when stability feels far away.
Most of us didn’t choose this profession because it was easy or glamorous. We chose it because it mattered. Because we saw a need for clarity, honesty and someone willing to stay when the system feels overwhelming.
This industry asks a lot of us. Policies change, carriers shift and the work can be exhausting. But the real value lies in the long-term relationships we build and the trust we earn over time.
As members of NABIP Northern Nevada, we represent a steady, enduring kind of love, the kind that shows up even when it’s inconvenient, advocates when it would be easier not to and stays.
Thank you for the work you do, the integrity you bring and the love you show our community every day.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

Operation Shout: Protect Coverage Affordability for Millions
Congress is at a critical decision point for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace.
The U.S. House has passed a three-year extension of the enhanced premium tax credits (EPTCs) that help millions afford coverage. The Senate must act now and your voice is urgently needed.
Extending EPTCs, creating a 90-day Special Enrollment Period and avoiding a hard income cliff would lower premiums, prevent coverage losses and ensure families can access affordable plans when they need them. These steps protect continuity of coverage, reduce affordability shocks and strengthen the Marketplace for people across income levels.
Health insurance and benefits professionals see firsthand what happens when affordability protections disappear.
Tell Senators Catherine Cortez‑Masto and Jacky Rosen to protect coverage and affordability.
